Based on a personal story
Few years ago, Peter Green broke his rotator cuff, and thus had a shoulder surgery. He had one of the best surgeons doing the operation, maximum amount of physical therapist visits, but when it was time to continue doing exercises at home, it turned out that physical therapy was boring and painful, which was not motivating at all.
He came up with an idea of a game that would supplement physical therapy, making it fun and get people to do their exercises. But this wasn’t possible until he met his future team.
A hackathon headstart
In 2015, Helsinki University Hospital held a hackathon challenge to make its new children’s hospital a happier place. Team Rehaboo!, at the time a student team from Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, studying humanities, physiotherapy and game development, decided to build a physiotherapeutic game to help kids recover from surgeries and won the challenge. At the event, they met the present CEO Green and decided to join forces. But this was only the beginning…
Rehaboo Ltd was established in November 2016, at the Health Innovation Village at GE Healthcare Finland (a co-working space for Digital Health startups). Same year, the first angel investments were secured, and the company was formed with three original hackathon team members and few new co-founders. The current game development team was founded in 2019, taking the idea to execution with a game artist, designer and two developers. The Rehaboo! Active game was “finished” by the end of 2019.
Also at the end of 2019, Rehaboo! opened a seed round to keep on developing the game, and for internationalization. Investors, welcome to join the Rehaboo! story
Moving forward
From the Ultrahack hackathon to Slush pitching competition to Health Innovation Village at GE was a good start. The pilot projects with all the three selected target groups were great proof of concept. The artificial intelligence- and cloud computing based motion sensing (computer vision) calculations for the functional laptop game version was the final step in preparing for the future.
The Rehaboo! Active Exercise Games will keep on developing, there will be new movements and tracks added every quarter, and as a Game as a Service (GaaS) we are producing game content on a continuing revenue model, similar to Software as a Service (SaaS).
Rehaboo! is aiming for fast global expansion within 2021-2023, starting with Denmark (hub for the rest of Nordic countries, as well as for the Benelux countries and Germany) and Singapore to start the Asian operations.
We are constantly looking for talent and partners to support our story, in game development and in internationalization. We are also looking at sales and distribution partners within the target markets.
